Library

Exterior and Interior View of the Library The Library is open from Mondays to Fridays except on Public Holidays. The Library hours are as follows:

During Term Time
Monday to Friday0830 - 1730 hours
During the Vacations
Monday to Friday0830 - 1600 hours
The Library is manned by a Library Officer and a Library Attendant. They are assisted by the Students Librarians who have the authority to ensure that students do not misuse the Library facitilies.

The books are divided into four categories: Reference, Lending and Red Spot. Students are to refer to the Library Officer for details of loan procedure. Fiction books are labeled and arranged alphabetically according to the first three letters of each author’s surname.

A growing collection of CD-Roms and videotapes covering a wide range of topics and interests are made available to the students. The library, recognizing the value of internet services, provide free internet access for all TJC students.

MERLIN (MOE Integrated Library Network) is the computerized On-Line Public Access Catalogue ( OPAC) which lists all the materials available in the Library. Students can use MERLIN to:

  • Look for books, periodicals and non-prints materials ( video tapes and CD Roms) by author, title and subject,
  • Check their own records for information on books borrowed, fines and overdue books.
Loan service will close at 1700 hours except during the vacations when loan services will close half an hour before the library closes for the day.

Library Rules

  • Silence must be maintained at all times.
  • Students are to wear College uniform or at least College T-shirt and College skirt/trousers in the Library.
  • Library staff and Student Librarians have the authority to ask inconsiderate students and those who are inappropriately dressed to leave the Library.
  • Food and drinks, electronic games and mini-stereos are not to be brought into the Library,
  • Stealing and mutilation of library materials are serious offences. Students found guilty of these offences will be dismissed from College. Students should, therefore, take the precaution of checking books thoroughly and should inform the Librarian on duty of any mutilation or missing pages before borrowing of books.
  • Reservation of seats is not allowed. Books, files and other personal belongings left lying on seats for more than fifteen minutes will be removed.
  • Used books and periodicals are to be returned to their respective shelves.

       

Study Areas

Learning Under the LT Private study areas that can accommodate 380 students are made available under the two main lecture theatres, near the Art studios and the Library.

       

Students' Lounge

Students may make use of the Students' Lounge, which is opened from Monday to Friday from 1230 hours to 1800 hours, for recreational pursuits such as carrom, snooker and other board games.

       

Dance Studio @ Sports Complex

Students who want to use the dance studio for organised group activities must inform the PE department and make a booking at least one week beforehand.

The dance studio can be used only when not used for PE lessons or school table-tennis training.

       

Multi-purpose Sports Field

The field is used mainly for PE lessons, soccer training, rugby training, touch rugby training and track and field training (throw events).

Students may use the field also for organised events such as Inter-House Games.

The use of the field is restricted the above purposes for maintenance reasons. However, students who want to use the field for any other organised large group activities may seek approval with the PE department.

Small ad-hoc groups who want to play soccer may do so at the D-area or the assembly area. No booking is required for using these areas.

Bookings for the field must made at least one week in advance through the Head of the PE Department.

       

Gymnasium

The air-con college gymnasium is equipped with a treadmill, rowing machine, stepper, indoor bicycle, Bodymasters circuit-type machines, dumb-bells, bar-bells and so on.

Students are welcomed to use the gymnasium any time during school days except during times when the gym is used for PE lessons or PDP training.

No prior booking is necessary. Students may need to get the key to the gym from the PE department if the gym is locked.

All students using the gym must sign in their attendance in the log book with their full name and CG.

All users of the gym are responsible for switching off all lights, fans and air-con and putting away equipment neatly after use and locking up.

Students who fail to adhere to 4 and 5 may be banned from further using the gym.

Gym users are also to adhere to the rules and regulations mounted on the wall of the gym.

       

Indoor Squash Courts

Students are welcomed to use the squash courts any time during school days except when PE lessons or squash training is going on in the courts.

No prior booking is necessary however, students may need to get the key to the courts from the PE department if the courts are locked.

Court users must be in sports attire and use non-marking court shoes.

Players will have to use their own rackets and balls.

All lights and fans must be switched off and courts locked up after use.

       

Tennis Courts

There are two full courts and a half court for wall practice.

Students may use the courts any time during school days except when they are used for PE lessons or school tennis team training. (The courts are reserved for the latter and teachers use on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays from 5.30pm to 8pm and on Saturdays 8am to 12pm.)

Court users must be in sports attire and use non-marking court shoes.

Students may borrow tennis rackets and balls from the PE department. Students will need to deposit their EZ link cards for loans.

No prior booking is needed.

Students will have to seek permission for court use, loan equipment and draw keys at the PE department.

       

Basketball Courts

Students are welcomed to play basketball on the 2 courts during their free time. No booking is needed.

However the courts are reserved for school basketball training on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 7.30pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 11am.

Students using the courts must be in sports attire. Students in school uniform are not allowed to use the courts.

Soccer is strictly not allowed in the basketball courts.

Basketballs can be borrowed from the PE department with the deposit of the EZlink card.

       

Netball Courts

There are 2 netball courts - one beside the soccer field and one beside the squash courts.

Students are welcomed to use the courts for ball games such as netball or captain’s ball when they are not used for PE lessons, school netball training or track and field (javelin) training.

No prior booking is necessary.

       

Volleyball Court

There is one outdoor volleyball court just beside the tennis courts.

Students are welcomed to use the court any time during school days as long as it is not used for PE lessons.

Players must be in sports attire.

Volleyballs can be borrowed from the PE department with the deposit of the EZlink card.

       

D-area (between the field and tennis courts)

Students are welcomed to use this area for games such as soccer except when the school hockey team is having training.

Students must be in sports attire. Students found playing in school uniform will be punished.

       

Barbecue Pits

Students are welcomed to use the 3 barbecue pits near the sports complex for social gatherings. The pits are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Bookings must be made with the PE department at least one week in advance.

Tables and benches from the sports complex may be used. However, the barbecue pits, tables, chairs and surrounding area must be cleaned up immediately after use. Hot charcoal and ashes may be removed the following morning before 7.30am.

Rubbish must be disposed of properly.

Washing of utensils must not be done in the toilets. Washing is only allowed at the taps near the basketball courts.

The teacher in charge must be present if the barbecue pits are used outside school hours, that is, Mondays to Fridays after 7pm, Saturdays after 2pm and on Sundays. The teacher will have to draw out the school gate keys from the general office to let students out of college after the barbecue.

First Aid and Sick Bay

The First Aid Unit is run by students and provides ancillary service at College functions and in the sick bay. The sick bay is open on Monday to Friday from 0740 hours to 1540 hours. Students are required to sign a book-in/book-out register in the General Office when they make use of the sick bay.

       

Lockers

The Students' Council makes lockers available to students for a small fee.

       

Notice Boards and the Public Address system

The notice boards beside the General Office are used to convey information intended for the entire the student body. Announcements made over the public address system during morning assemblies will be minimal and confined to urgent and vital matters only. Students are expected to refer to the relevant notice boards for information on co-curricular activities or on academic matters.

       

Cafeteria

The cafeteria opens during school days (weekdays) from 7pm to 3am, serving both breakfast and lunch.

Vending Machines

There are altogether 7 vending machines located in the cafeteria, 1 serving snacks and the others serving package/can drinks (Yeos and carbonated).

       

Photocopy Shop

The photocopy shop is located in the cafeteria, near the Students' Council notice board. Lecture notes, tutorials, formula booklets and past-year exam papers can also be purchased from the photocopy shop. The shop also provides photocopy service to students.

Besides the shop, students can also photocopy in the library (ground floor behind the magazines rack). The photocopier machines in the library operates on card system. Students can purchase the photocopy card from the photocopy shop at a cost of $5.00 and $7.00 for 140 and 210 phtocopying pieces respectively.

The opening hours of the shop is from 8am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to 12pm on Saturdays. It may open on selected days during the school holidays. Please look out for notice displayed at the shop for more details.

       

Book/Stationary Shop

The bookshop is located in the cafeteria, next to the photocopy shop.

The shop sells popular stationaries, books and school uniforms (including house t-shirts)
