Mathematics 'S' Paper Outstanding students in mathematics can choose to offer Maths 'S' Paper. This is the only 'S' paper in mathematics since year 2002.This paper is optional and requires an extra fee. Assessment Format There is only 1 three-hour paper. The structure is as follows: Section A: (40%) 3 or 4 compulsory questions, each carrying varying marks, and involving authentic problem solving. Questions may involve knowledge from the Pure Mathematics Section of the syllabus. Knowledge from the Particle Mechanics or Probability and Statistics Sections will not be required. Section B: (60%) 7 questions based on the Mathematics 9223 syllabus. there will be 3 questions from the Pure Mathematics Section, 2 questions from the Particle Mechanics Section, and 2 questions from the Probability and Statistics Section. Each question is worth 15 marks, and candidates need to answer any four questions. Although the syllabus remains the same in content, the questions set are generally more difficult and more demanding than the Mathematics 9233 Paper. Students who are very proficient in Mathematics are encouraged to offer this paper. The selection of the students will be carried out at the end of the first year and will be based on the overall performance in the Promotional Examination as well as their performance in tutorials and course work. Physics 'S' Paper Outstanding students in physics can choose to offer Physics 'S' Paper. This paper is optional and requires an extra fee.Assessment Format It is a 3-hour paper and contains more difficult questions based on the core syllabus. Section A is compulsory and consists of a number of short questions. Section B consists of six longer questions of which candidates are to answer any three. In Section B, a maximum of two questions will be set in which a knowledge of differential and/or integral calculus will be advantageous. Such questions will be marked with an asterisk (*). Chemistry 'S' Paper Outstanding students in chemistry can choose to offer Chemistry 'S' Paper. This paper is optional and requires an extra fee.Assessment Format It is 2 hours 30 min in duration and contains harder questions, based on the core syllabus and arranged in 3 sections. Candidates will be required to answer 5 questions. Biology 'S' Paper Outstanding students in biolgy can choose to offer Biolgy 'S' Paper. This paper is optional and requires an extra fee.Assessment Format It is 2 hours and 30 minutes in duration and is designed to give opportunities for candidates to show their ability to think independently and to give evidence of wide reading. The paper consists of eleven questions of which three questions are based on the Core syllabus and two each of ten questions are biased towards a different Option Syllabus. Candidates must answer any three questions. The paper often contains questions of a rather general nature which requires candidates to select and organise the most appropriate arguments and/or pieces of information with which to illustrate their arguments. Economics 'S' Paper Outstanding students in economics can choose to offer Economics 'S' Paper. This paper is optional and requires an extra fee.Assessment Format Although based on the 'A' level syllabus, this paper demands three hours of essay-writing in response to questions that are more searching and analytical than those in Economics 'A' Level (9074). It would be helpful to students seeking admission into top British universities to study Economics and/or related subjects to offer the 'S' paper. Geography 'S' Paper This paper is intended for students with a special aptitude for the subject. The programme involves extra tutorials in which selected issues are discussed in depth and also looked at from a broader perspective.Outstanding students in geography can choose to offer Geography 'S' Paper. This paper is optional and requires an extra fee. Assessment Format The paper consists of three extended essays within three hours. History 'S' Paper This paper can be taken by outstanding students who have a genuine interest in studying the subject in greater breadth and depth. The examination paper includes questions of a general historical nature as well as others which relate to the 'A' level papers chosen. Special Paper work takes place in Year 2.This paper is optional and requires an extra fee. English Literature 'S' Paper This paper is intended for students who have a real interest in literature. They should have a wide background in reading for its own sake and write with considerable aplomb.This paper is optional and requires an extra fee. Assessment Format The examination is a three-hour paper; one practical criticism exercise plus two essays on writers of the candidate's choice. Chinese 'S' Paper This paper is only offered to students who are in the Chinese LEP (Language Elective Programme). All LEP students must offer this 'S' paper. |
