English Literature

A strong and dedicated teaching team is a key strength of the Literature Department at TJC. A unique feature is the specialised passions and knowledge that each teacher brings to the teaching of various texts. We have teachers with strong academic backgrounds in diverse topics such as  Postcolonial Theory, Fantasy Literature, Women's Writing, Children's Fiction, Gender Studies, Religious Literature, South American Writing and many more.  Armed with great knowledge, our pedagogical belief in the importance of delivering content that "stretches without overwhelming minds" ensures that an interest in the subject is consistently maintained.

In addition to great scholarly attributes, all tutors have complementary skills that are useful for the teaching of Literature.  They include creative writing skills, drama (acting and directing) experience and choral singing experiences.  These skills add to a dynamic and vibrant teaching culture that not only inspires but 'infects'. The classroom is an exciting space where intellect, passion, wisdom and humanity are imparted to the young mind.  At TJ, it is the experience of learning that is a key goal of Literature learning.

All these have resulted in outstanding Literature results at the GCE 'A' Levels.  For the past 3 consecutive years, we have attained more than 70% Distinctions and more that 90% AB grades for H2 Lit.  These results attest to the fact that we have an outstanding and high calibre group of teachers ready to take you on a literary journey that will surely expand the limits of your mind.

Language Arts

The Language Arts programme in TA 1 and 2 is a three-pronged approach to the learning and appreciation of the English Language: the Literary Approach, the study of Language and the General Knowledge component.  Through the reading of literary texts, students will develop critical thinking and analytical skills. At the same time, salient linguistic features in these texts will be examined.  In addition, current real world instances of issues and themes raised in the texts will be considered to ascertain its relevance and how they may have evolved.

Through various teaching and classroom learning methods, students will be given opportunities to create, hone their thinking skills, and strengthen their power of communication and expression.
