TJC Physical Education Department
Introduction
Our TJC Physical Education (PE) Department is in line with the Temasek Excellence model and falls within the Character and Leadership Excellence section. Our PE Department provides a holistic education through structured fitness-centered lessons during Mass PE and Group PE, and active learning and participation through PE Electives, catered to JC1s, JC2s and TA students.
Mission
At TJC, we believe strongly in cultivating in students the mindset of keeping fit, staying healthy, and having continued enhancement of their resilience through exciting physical activities/programmes.
Through our Personal Development Programmes (PDPs) and the SportsXcel Programme, students are given countless opportunities to participate and excel, with focus on character development and emphasis on leadership roles and responsibilities.
Annual Events
TJC has a vibrant sporting culture, thanks in no small part to the key sporting events organized annually by our PE Department.
TJC Road Run
The TJC Road Run is an annual intra-college sporting event comprising 3 race categories; Boys race (5.1km), Girls race (3.5km) and Staff race (3.1km). It marks the start of the college’s sporting activities for the year and takes participants on a scenic running route around the neighbouring housing estates. Participants compete for individual glory and that of their respective Houses but all finishers will receive a certificate of completion.
TJC Track and Field Meet
The annual TJC Track and Field meet is the second major sporting event for the school. Competitors compete in various events ranging from sprints, distance running, relay running to throwing and jumping events. In addition, there are also novelty events like the House Cheerleading competition and Staff races to add variety and fun to the event.
Sports Carnival
The Sports Carnival is an intra-college games meet held once every 2 years. It is organized and run by the students of the respective PDPs and SportsXcel. Games on offer include Basketball, Captain’s ball, Street Soccer, Foosball, Tug-of-War, Ultimate Frisbee and many more. The Sports Carnival allows students to showcase their organizational and leadership skills in planning exciting competitions for their peers. Students compete at both the Intra-House levels as well as at the Inter-House.
Temasek Ignite
Temasek Ignite is an annual school ceremony which marks the start of the Inter-School Championships as well as the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF). It serves as a platform to bring about school cohesion and also to ignite the Temasek Spirit.
During the ceremony, a compilation of video clips which showcase the distinctiveness of each PDP is played. This is to create awareness of how various PDPs prepare for competition. The various sports and arts PDPs are also presented with the Team Temasek and Arts@Temasek t-shirts respectively.
Sportsmen Appreciation Ceremony
The TJC Sportsmen Appreciation Ceremony marks the end of the inter-school competition season. It is a time where the college gathers to applaud the effort of its sportsmen and salutes their achievements. The highlight of the ceremony is the change of guard where the college shows its appreciation to the outgoing executive committee (exco) members of each PDP and welcomes in the new batch of exco members.

PE Electives
PE electives aim to expose our students to a greater variety of sports, both conventional and unconventional. Incorporated into our PE Programme, students go through regular, structured lessons that facilitate the learning of a sports skill at the beginner level. Upon completion of the elective, students would have learnt basic game rules and skills which will enable them to participate in the sport and enjoy it at a recreational level. There are also single-session electives. Through PE electives, students realize that sports can be easy, fun and exciting, and they are encouraged to adopt an active lifestyle through and beyond their JC years.
PE electives are conducted by our PE staff as well as external agencies. The following are some of the electives we offer to the students to choose based on their level of interest:

NAPFA Test
The National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) test comprises 6 items, which is identified by the Singapore Sports Council to be safe, reliable and representative measures of the different important components of overall fitness.
All students in the college are required to attend the NAPFA test unless they are exempted on medical grounds. To prepare the students for the test, our PE tutors design and conduct a series of fitness and conditioning trainings to help the students to improve their overall fitness. In these lessons, students also get to learn the respective technique required to excel in each test station.

Learning Circle
Learning Circle (LC) is a platform for a group of educators to come together to reflect on our teaching practices, and dialogue to reach a shared understanding about teaching and learning. LC allows us to align the strategies we implement in our classrooms with our beliefs.
In 2008, our PE department started its journey in LC. The first project was working on how the tutors could help students improve their performance in Standing Broad Jump, Pull-up and Inclined pull-up for NAPFA Test. After a few rounds of brainstorming, the team came up with checklists for the three items identified. Each checklist includes Goal Setting by student, illustration/tips on how to execute the action well, as well as an 8-weeks training plan template.
For 2009, the team is looking at how the students can enhance their awareness on the benefits of physical training.
PE Blog
Our PE department will launch its very own PE blog soon. The blog will be updated weekly and include information on upcoming events, tutors’ viewpoints and a Man of the Match section that features athletes, past or present, who have something for us to learn and benefit from.
