United Kingdoms University Applications (by Mr Mike Thompson)

YOUR UCAS APPLICATION: 2004

UCAS stands for “Universities and Colleges Admissions Service?

Nearly all UK university applications are processed initially by UCAS. Your application, which will cost you ?5.00 (about S$42/-), enables you to apply for six courses at different universities.

Here at Temasek, UCAS applications are processed electronically. I cannot submit any application until 1 September 2003.

You are strongly advised to apply through the College rather than, say, the British Council.

I shall be giving a briefing to all interested students on Wednesday 13 August, 2003, during contact time. By that time I shall have received the UCAS software and details will be available then on how to make your electronic application.

For those applying to Oxford or Cambridge University (you cannot apply to both) or for courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, an early application is necessary and it is essential that you complete your application before the beginning of Term 4, especially as you will thereafter be heavily involved in Preliminary Examinations.

Both Oxford and Cambridge Universities interview applicants in Singapore towards the end of Term 4. I know already that Cambridge University expects to undertake a programme of interviews during the week 27 October to 1 November 2003. They will ask all applicants to sit for a test on the Saturday afternoon prior to the interview week.

Applications for Cambridge, Oxford
  • A separate paper application form must also be sent to the relevant admissions office.
  • All paper forms must be completed and handed to me by 15 September 2003 (first day of Term 3), with the fee and $1 to cover postage. The floppy disk containing your UCAS application must also be handed in by this deadline.
  • Cambridge forms can be obtained from me. Oxford application forms can be obtained from the British Council or from the Internet.
Applications for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science
  • Please hand in floppy disk by Monday 15 September 2003 (first day of Term 3).
All other applications
  • All other applications through UCAS to be submitted to me by Friday 17 October 2003.
  • I shall ensure that all of these are processed by the end of term.
  • If you wait until after your A?Level results are released, you may find that some of the most sought after courses at prestigious universities are already full.
  • However, for those male Singaporean students expecting to fulfil their NS responsibilities before higher education, it is better to leave any UK application until later as UK universities will only defer entry for 1 year.
A useful website is www.timesonline.co.uk (which allows you to consult the “Good University Guide?produced by The Times newspaper).

Alternatively, you might like to look at education.guardian.co.uk/universityguide2003/0,13330,956807,00.html, which offers a similar survey of British universities, carried out by The Guardian newspaper.
