What is PDP?

The College strongly believes that education is more than just a pursuit of academic excellence. College education encompasses the total development of the person. As such, the college offers the Personal Development Programme (PDP) to enhance the character development of the student.

PDP is similar to the Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) in Secondary schools. PDP activities commence in early January of Year 1 and stop before the Year 2 Preliminary Exams. There will be an exhibition during the orientation for the new students so that they will have an idea of the PDPs offered and the ones to join.

College PDP Policy

Every student is expected to be actively involved in at least one co-curricular activity or personal development programme (PDP) as it is known in TJC. Students have the liberty to choose from the wide selection of programmes based on their interest.

In some cases, however, the College may require a student with a specific talent or skill to participate in a particular activity. Due support and recognition will be accorded to all who contribute.

Involvement in a Personal Development Programme does not confine one to the PDP’s specific activity. Students are encouraged to share their knowledge and expertise with fellow College students. They are also required to organise college-based inter-House activities and prepare students for participation.

As the main thrust of the PDP is involvement for the purpose of character development, the College is not compelled to enter inter-school competitions. However, the college will participate in inter-school competitions if members are keen to do so and if the competitions are in line with the College objectives.

To reap the rewards of PDP involvement, there must be commitment among PDP members. First year students are advised to gain as much as they can from the College PDP as they are expected to contribute and take on leadership roles when they are in their second year. This second year involvement may be more intensive as it will cease in good time to enable them to give their full attention to the preparation of the 'A' level examinations. At the end of their term, points will be awarded for participation under the PEARLS system and may be used for admission into the universities.

PDP Registration

The College runs a centralised online system for students to sign-up PDP memberships.

For details please visit the Student's Portal.

Election of Office Bearers

In line with the college’s plan to develop leaders, all PDP groups have office bearers to run their programme. During the first half of the year, Year one students are given the opportunity to be familiar with their chosen PDP.

They are also trained with the management and PDP-specific skills, knowledge, relevant ‘traditions’ by the Year two students and teachers in charge. In some PDPs, Year one students also receive training by external agencies. Their strengths and abilities are identified during this period of time.

Between May to July, PDP groups form their new committees comprising of Year one students. This is done either by appointment by teachers and Year two office bearers or by election by PDP members. In some PDPs, students assume office through both appointment and election. Year two committee members may continue to guide Year one committee members until August.

All office bearers such as the chairman, secretary, treasurer, committee member are given due recognition for their leadership contribution in their CCA records.

Loan of Sports Equipment

Students who wish to use the facilities of the Sports complex or borrow sports equipment from the PE department to play games may do so between 1000h and 1800h from Monday to Friday during the Term-time. Students may borrow equipment with their Student Pass.

Students are to return sports equipment punctually. No equipment may be brought home.

Students must be properly attired when participating in any sports or games within the College compound. The attire for PE is the College or House T-Shirt, the College shorts and sport shoes. Sports attire used during the students’ free time or during PDP training should be reflective of College Identity.

The PE department reserves the right to deny any student the use of sports facilities and equipment if the rules are not adhered to.

The PE department must be given in advanced notice about student-organized activities involving the use of sport complex, the basket ball courts, netball courts, squash courts, track, field and obstacle course.

Student Leadership Camp

The College holds an adventure camp and a Student Leadership camp during the March holidays. Most PDP groups in the College hold camps during the March, June or December holidays to provide opportunities for students to experience challenging adventure activities. First year Student Leaders are required to attend an Outward Bound Course in November. Students who are not selected may also opt to attend this course if there are sufficient vacancies.

Cadet Lieutenants or Cadet Inspectors Training

Students who were members of the National Cadet Corps or the National Police Cadet Corps may continue by opting to become Cadet Lieutenants or Cadet Inspectors. A short training stint at the respective headquarters will precede their appointment.
